Making Disciples of Our Children
Devotion
Deuteronomy 4:7-10
“For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the LORD our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him? And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you this day?
Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life.
And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, especially concerning the day you stood before the LORD your God in Horeb, when the LORD said to me, ‘Gather the people to ME, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children’.”
Moses is reminding the people what God as done for them right before they go into the promise land. God has provided them food, water, guided them with fire by night and cloud by day, fought for them, protected them, kept His promises, loved them, blessed them, they witnessed miracles, judgments, and were given the law.
They had seen His power and received His word. They were to remember these events and teach them to their children. We need to be concerned for our children and their knowledge of God. If the covenant is not taught to the children, the failure of the nation is assured.
Christians’ have had the privileges to know, hear, and to experience God. We as parents need to be sharing Christ with our children and grandchildren, teaching them to love their God and love their neighbor. They learn this by watching us. Our job involves a process of “making disciples” of our children.
The LORD is our ultimate teacher, we are his students. Our children learn from us but they need to experience Jesus then selves. Teach them to pray for the Holy Spirit to give them a divine revelation, to give them wisdom, to fear the LORD (respect), His truth, right judgment, and the difference between right and wrong.
Our children need to see us being humble, eager to learn, and obedient. We are to remember His lessons and diligently do what he taught us to do. Above all, teach our children to learn with our wills as well as with our minds. We are to live out, not simply know, His law.
I will always encourage you to open up your own bibles and let God speak to you. He wants to talk to you! Write down what He tells you, so you can remember. Share with other what He has done for you.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9
And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit down in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall write them on the doorpost of your house and on your gates.
John 1:14
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the father, full of grace and truth….. Talk about JESUS!
